I tell you, then, that you will be able to enter the Kingdom of heaven only if you are more faithful than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees in doing what God requires.

Some Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with such people?"

Then the Pharisees left and made plans to kill Jesus.

Then some Pharisees and teachers of the Law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked him,

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together,

"The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees are the authorized interpreters of Moses' Law.

Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins.

Peter and John were still speaking to the people when some priests, the officer in charge of the Temple guards, and some Sadducees arrived.

When Paul saw that some of the group were Sadducees and the others were Pharisees, he called out in the Council, "Fellow Israelites! I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees. I am on trial here because of the hope I have that the dead will rise to life!"

(For the Sadducees say that people will not rise from death and that there are no angels or spirits; but the Pharisees believe in all three.)

Jesus, however, was aware of their evil plan, and so he said, "You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me?

Others wanted to trap Jesus, so they asked him to perform a miracle to show that God approved of him.

When Jesus left that place, the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to criticize him bitterly and ask him questions about many things,

trying to lay traps for him and catch him saying something wrong.

But Jesus saw through their trick and said to them,

They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he bent over and wrote on the ground with his finger.

Then some teachers of the Law and some Pharisees spoke up. "Teacher," they said, "we want to see you perform a miracle."

"How evil and godless are the people of this day!" Jesus exclaimed. "You ask me for a miracle? No! The only miracle you will be given is the miracle of the prophet Jonah.

Some Pharisees came to Jesus and started to argue with him. They wanted to trap him, so they asked him to perform a miracle to show that God approved of him.

He left them, got back into the boat, and started across to the other side of the lake.

Others wanted to trap Jesus, so they asked him to perform a miracle to show that God approved of him.

As the people crowded around Jesus, he went on to say, "How evil are the people of this day! They ask for a miracle, but none will be given them except the miracle of Jonah.

In the same way that the prophet Jonah was a sign for the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be a sign for the people of this day.

Jesus said also to the people, "When you see a cloud coming up in the west, at once you say that it is going to rain---and it does.

Hypocrites! You can look at the earth and the sky and predict the weather; why, then, don't you know the meaning of this present time?

They replied, "What miracle will you perform so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?

Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, just as the scripture says, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' "

Jews want miracles for proof, and Greeks look for wisdom.
