"When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that it will soon be destroyed.

Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills; those who are in the city must leave, and those who are out in the country must not go into the city.

For those will be 'The Days of Punishment,' to make come true all that the Scriptures say.

How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! Terrible distress will come upon this land, and God's punishment will fall on this people.

Some will be killed by the sword, and others will be taken as prisoners to all countries; and the heathen will trample over Jerusalem until their time is up.

When the enemy besieges her town, she will become so desperate for food that she will secretly eat her newborn child and the afterbirth as well. She will not share them with the husband she loves or with any of her children.

Isaiah 29:1-4

God's altar, Jerusalem itself, is doomed! The city where David camped is doomed! Let another year or two come and go, with its feasts and festivals,

and then God will bring disaster on the city that is called "God's altar." There will be weeping and wailing, and the whole city will be like an altar covered with blood.

God will attack the city, surround it, and besiege it.

Jerusalem will be like a ghost struggling to speak from under the ground, a muffled voice coming from the dust.

kings will camp there with their armies. They will pitch their tents around the city, and each of them will camp wherever they want.

The LORD Almighty has ordered these kings to cut down trees and build mounds in order to besiege Jerusalem. He has said, "I will punish this city because it is full of oppression.
