But Paul said to the police officers, "We were not found guilty of any crime, yet they whipped us in public---and we are Roman citizens! Then they threw us in prison. And now they want to send us away secretly? Not at all! The Roman officials themselves must come here and let us out."

The police officers reported these words to the Roman officials; and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were afraid.

But when they had tied him up to be whipped, Paul said to the officer standing there, "Is it lawful for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried for any crime?"

So the commander went to Paul and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes," answered Paul.

But I could not find that he had done anything for which he deserved the death sentence. And since he himself made an appeal to the Emperor, I have decided to send him.

I found out that he had not done a thing for which he deserved to die or be put in prison; the accusation against him had to do with questions about their own law.

and after leaving they said to each other, "This man has not done anything for which he should die or be put in prison."

After questioning me, the Romans wanted to release me, because they found that I had done nothing for which I deserved to die.

He knew very well that the Jewish authorities had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous.

But Pilate asked, "What crime has he committed?" Then they started shouting at the top of their voices: "Crucify him!"

When Pilate saw that it was no use to go on, but that a riot might break out, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am not responsible for the death of this man! This is your doing!"

We put aside all secret and shameful deeds; we do not act with deceit, nor do we falsify the word of God. In the full light of truth we live in God's sight and try to commend ourselves to everyone's good conscience.
