Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and treated him with contempt; then they put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

When I was hungry, they gave me poison; when I was thirsty, they offered me vinegar.

Then they made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on his head, and put a stick in his right hand; then they knelt before him and made fun of him. "Long live the King of the Jews!" they said.

They spat on him, and took the stick and hit him over the head.

There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it.

One of them ran up at once, took a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, put it on the end of a stick, and tried to make him drink it.

They beat him over the head with a stick, spat on him, fell on their knees, and bowed down to him.

When they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

One of them ran up with a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, and put it on the end of a stick. Then he held it up to Jesus' lips and said, "Wait! Let us see if Elijah is coming to bring him down from the cross!"

Jesus knew that by now everything had been completed; and in order to make the scripture come true, he said, "I am thirsty."

Jesus drank the wine and said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
