"Why are we sitting still?" God's people ask. "Come on, we will run to the fortified cities and die there. The LORD our God has condemned us to die; he has given us poison to drink, because we have sinned against him.

So then, listen to what I, the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, will do: I will give my people bitter plants to eat and poison to drink.

"So then, this is what I, the LORD Almighty, say about the prophets of Jerusalem: I will give them bitter plants to eat and poison to drink, because they have spread ungodliness throughout the land."

There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it.

One of them ran up at once, took a sponge, soaked it in cheap wine, put it on the end of a stick, and tried to make him drink it.

There they tried to give him wine mixed with a drug called myrrh, but Jesus would not drink it.

The soldiers also made fun of him: they came up to him and offered him cheap wine,

A bowl was there, full of cheap wine; so a sponge was soaked in the wine, put on a stalk of hyssop, and lifted up to his lips.

Jesus drank the wine and said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
