At the hour of the afternoon sacrifice the prophet Elijah approached the altar and prayed, "O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove now that you are the God of Israel and that I am your servant and have done all this at your command.

Answer me, LORD, answer me, so that this people will know that you, the LORD, are God and that you are bringing them back to yourself."

Moses prayed earnestly to the LORD and said, "What can I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me."

and said to Samuel, "Keep praying to the LORD our God to save us from the Philistines."

Samuel killed a young lamb and burned it whole as a sacrifice to the LORD. Then he prayed to the LORD to help Israel, and the LORD answered his prayer.

The Assyrian emperor has sent his chief official to insult the living God. May the LORD your God hear these insults and punish those who spoke them. So pray to God for those of our people who survive."

and prayed, "O LORD, the God of Israel, seated on your throne above the winged creatures, you alone are God, ruling all the kingdoms of the world. You created the earth and the sky.

Moses and Aaron were his priests, and Samuel was one who prayed to him; they called to the LORD, and he answered them.

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

This prayer made in faith will heal the sick; the Lord will restore them to health, and the sins they have committed will be forgiven.

Elijah was the same kind of person as we are. He prayed earnestly that there would be no rain, and no rain fell on the land for three and a half years.

Abraham approached the LORD and asked, "Are you really going to destroy the innocent with the guilty?

Surely you won't kill the innocent with the guilty. That's impossible! You can't do that. If you did, the innocent would be punished along with the guilty. That is impossible. The judge of all the earth has to act justly."

What can I say, O Lord, now that Israel has retreated from the enemy?

The Canaanites and everyone else in the country will hear about it. They will surround us and kill every one of us! And then what will you do to protect your honor?"

Is it for nothing, then, that I have kept myself pure and have not committed sin?

O God, you have made me suffer all day long; every morning you have punished me.

" LORD, if I argued my case with you, you would prove to be right. Yet I must question you about matters of justice. Why are the wicked so prosperous? Why do dishonest people succeed?
