Joseph's brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about the whole matter.

But they did not understand his answer.

So Jesus went back with them to Nazareth, where he was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

'The Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and three days later rise to life.' "

Then the women remembered his words,

Some of his disciples asked among themselves, "What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says, 'It is because I am going to the Father.'

Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, "I said, 'In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me.' Is this what you are asking about among yourselves?

But they did not understand what this teaching meant, and they were afraid to ask him.

Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "God forbid it, Lord!" he said. "That must never happen to you!"

They will whip him and kill him, but three days later he will rise to life."

But the disciples did not understand any of these things; the meaning of the words was hidden from them, and they did not know what Jesus was talking about.

Then Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said!

And Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets.

Jesus answered, "Tear down this Temple, and in three days I will build it again."

But the temple Jesus was speaking about was his body.

His disciples did not understand this at the time; but when Jesus had been raised to glory, they remembered that the scripture said this about him and that they had done this for him.

(In saying this he indicated the kind of death he was going to suffer.)

The crowd answered, "Our Law tells us that the Messiah will live forever. How, then, can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?"

Then his disciples said to him, "Now you are speaking plainly, without using figures of speech.

We know now that you know everything; you do not need to have someone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."

Certain Epicurean and Stoic teachers also debated with him. Some of them asked, "What is this ignorant show-off trying to say?" Others answered, "He seems to be talking about foreign gods." They said this because Paul was preaching about Jesus and the resurrection.
