Isaiah 5:25-30

The LORD is angry with his people and has stretched out his hand to punish them. The mountains will shake, and the bodies of those who die will be left in the streets like rubbish. Yet even then the LORD's anger will not be ended, but his hand will still be stretched out to punish.

The LORD gives a signal to call for a distant nation. He whistles for them to come from the ends of the earth. And here they come, swiftly, quickly!
27
None of them grow tired; none of them stumble. They never doze or sleep. Not a belt is loose; not a sandal strap is broken.
28
Their arrows are sharp, and their bows are ready to shoot. Their horses' hoofs are as hard as flint, and their chariot wheels turn like a whirlwind.

The soldiers roar like lions that have killed an animal and are carrying it off where no one can take it away from them.
30
When that day comes, they will roar over Israel as loudly as the sea. Look at this country! Darkness and distress! The light is swallowed by darkness.

The LORD said, "Assyria! I use Assyria like a club to punish those with whom I am angry.

The LORD is going to devastate the earth and leave it desolate. He will twist the earth's surface and scatter its people.

Everyone will meet the same fate---the priests and the people, slaves and masters, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, rich and poor.

The earth will lie shattered and ruined. The LORD has spoken and it will be done.

The earth dries up and withers; the whole world grows weak; both earth and sky decay.

The people have defiled the earth by breaking God's laws and by violating the covenant he made to last forever.

So God has pronounced a curse on the earth. Its people are paying for what they have done. Fewer and fewer remain alive.

The grapevines wither, and wine is becoming scarce. Everyone who was once happy is now sad,

and the joyful music of their harps and drums has ceased.

There is no more happy singing over wine; no one enjoys its taste any more.

In the city everything is in chaos, and people lock themselves in their houses for safety.

People shout in the streets because there is no more wine. Happiness is gone forever; it has been banished from the land.

The city is in ruins, and its gates have been broken down.

The brave are calling for help. The ambassadors who tried to bring about peace are crying bitterly.

The highways are so dangerous that no one travels on them. Treaties are broken and agreements are violated. No one is respected any more.

The land lies idle and deserted. The forests of Lebanon have withered, the fertile valley of Sharon is like a desert, and in Bashan and on Mount Carmel the leaves are falling from the trees.

Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah tore their clothes in grief and went and reported to the king what the Assyrian official had said.

and set it on fire. They will burn it down, together with the houses where people have made me angry by burning incense to Baal on the rooftops and by pouring out wine offerings to other gods.

From the very beginning of their history the people of Israel and the people of Judah have displeased me and made me angry by what they have done.

The people of this city have made me angry and furious from the day it was built. I have decided to destroy it

because of all the evil that has been done by the people of Judah and Jerusalem, together with their kings and leaders, their priests and prophets.

When King Zedekiah and all his soldiers saw what was happening, they tried to escape from the city during the night. They left by way of the royal garden, went through the gateway connecting the two walls, and escaped in the direction of the Jordan Valley.

Tell my rebellious people this parable that I, the Sovereign LORD, have for them: Set the pot on the fire and fill it up with water.

Put in the best pieces of meat--- the shoulders and the legs--- fill it with choice bony pieces too.

Use the meat of the finest sheep; pile the wood under the pot. Let the water boil; boil the bones and the meat."

This is what the Sovereign LORD is saying: "The city of murderers is doomed! It is like a corroded pot that is never cleaned. Piece after piece of meat is taken out, and not one is left.

There was murder in the city, but the blood was not spilled on the ground where the dust could hide it; it was spilled on a bare rock.

I have left the blood there, where it cannot be hidden, where it demands angry revenge."

This is what the Sovereign LORD is saying: "The city of murderers is doomed! I myself will pile up the firewood.

Bring more wood! Fan the flames! Cook the meat! Boil away the broth! Burn up the bones!

Now set the empty bronze pot on the coals and let it get red-hot. Then the pot will be ritually pure again after the corrosion is burned off,
12
although all that corrosion will not disappear in the flames.

Jerusalem, your immoral actions have defiled you. Although I tried to purify you, you remained defiled. You will not be pure again until you have felt the full force of my anger.
Ezekiel 39:17
The Sovereign LORD said to me, "Mortal man, call all the birds and animals to come from all around to eat the sacrifice I am preparing for them. It will be a huge feast on the mountains of Israel, where they can eat meat and drink blood.
Zephaniah 1:7
The day is near when the LORD will sit in judgment; so be silent in his presence. The LORD is preparing to sacrifice his people and has invited enemies to plunder Judah.
