Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith; Shephatiah, whose mother was Abital;

Then Nathan went to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, and asked her, "Haven't you heard that Haggith's son Adonijah has made himself king? And King David doesn't know anything about it!

The LORD has firmly established me on the throne of my father David; he has kept his promise and given the kingdom to me and my descendants. I swear by the living LORD that Adonijah will die this very day!"

Yet you are still arrogant and refuse to let my people go.

Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall.

No one is respected unless he is humble; arrogant people are on the way to ruin.

For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great."

I tell you," said Jesus, "the tax collector, and not the Pharisee, was in the right with God when he went home. For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great."

Be sure that the man you choose to be king is the one whom the LORD has chosen. He must be one of your own people; do not make a foreigner your king.

to ask the men of Shechem, "Which would you prefer? To have all seventy of Gideon's sons govern you or to have just one man? Remember that Abimelech is your own flesh and blood."

David thought, "The Temple that my son Solomon is to build must be splendid and world-famous. But he is young and inexperienced, so I must make preparations for it." So David got large amounts of the materials ready before he died.

David said to him, "Son, I wanted to build a temple to honor the LORD my God.

He did, however, make me a promise. He said, 'You will have a son who will rule in peace, because I will give him peace from all his enemies. His name will be Solomon, because during his reign I will give Israel peace and security.

David continued, "Now, son, may the LORD your God be with you, and may he keep his promise to make you successful in building a temple for him.

He gave me many sons, and out of them all he chose Solomon to rule over Israel, the LORD's kingdom.

King David announced to the whole assembly: "My son Solomon is the one whom God has chosen, but he is still young and lacks experience. The work to be done is tremendous, because this is not a palace for people but a temple for the LORD God.

The king is not to have a large number of horses for his army, and he is not to send people to Egypt to buy horses, because the LORD has said that his people are never to return there.

After this, Absalom provided a chariot and horses for himself, and an escort of fifty men.

Their land is full of silver and gold, and there is no end to their treasures. Their land is full of horses, and there is no end to their chariots.
