Exodus 16:22-30

On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food, four quarts for each person. All the leaders of the community came and told Moses about it,

and he said to them, "The LORD has commanded that tomorrow is a holy day of rest, dedicated to him. Bake today what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Whatever is left should be put aside and kept for tomorrow."
24
As Moses had commanded, they kept what was left until the next day; it did not spoil or get worms in it.
25
Moses said, "Eat this today, because today is the Sabbath, a day of rest dedicated to the LORD, and you will not find any food outside the camp.
26
You must gather food for six days, but on the seventh day, the day of rest, there will be none."
27
On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather food, but they did not find any.
28
Then the LORD said to Moses, "How much longer will you people refuse to obey my commands?
29
Remember that I, the LORD, have given you a day of rest, and that is why on the sixth day I will always give you enough food for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day and not leave his home."

So the people did no work on the seventh day.

I warned them, "It's no use waiting out there for morning to come. If you try this again, I'll use force on you." From then on they did not come back on the Sabbath.

I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and guard the gates to make sure that the Sabbath was kept holy. Remember me, O God, for this also, and spare me because of your great love.

People will come from the towns of Judah and from the villages around Jerusalem; they will come from the territory of Benjamin, from the foothills, from the mountains, and from southern Judah. They will bring to my Temple burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and incense, as well as thank offerings.

But they must obey me and observe the Sabbath as a sacred day. They must not carry any load through the gates of Jerusalem on that day, for if they do, I will set the gates of Jerusalem on fire. Fire will burn down the palaces of Jerusalem, and no one will be able to put it out."

Those who first heard the Good News did not receive that rest, because they did not believe. There are, then, others who are allowed to receive it.

This is shown by the fact that God sets another day, which is called "Today." Many years later he spoke of it through David in the scripture already quoted: "If you hear God's voice today, do not be stubborn."

If Joshua had given the people the rest that God had promised, God would not have spoken later about another day.

As it is, however, there still remains for God's people a rest like God's resting on the seventh day.

For those who receive that rest which God promised will rest from their own work, just as God rested from his.
